چکیده

The combination of low-thrust propulsion and gravity assists to enhance deep-space missions has proven to be a remarkable task. In this paper, we present a novel method that is based on evolutionary neurocontrollers. Themain advantage in the use of a neurocontroller is the generation of a control law with a limited number of decision variables. On the other hand, the evolutionary algorithm allows one to look for globally optimal solutions more efficiently than with a systematic search. In addition, a steepest-ascent algorithm is introduced that acts as a navigator during the planetary encounter, providing the neurocontroller with the optimal insertion parameters. Results are presented for a Mercury rendezvous with a Venus gravity assist and for a Pluto flyby with a Jupiter gravity assist.

Optimization of Very-low-thrust Trajectories Using Evolutionary Neurocontrol

Searching optimal interplanetary trajectories for low-thrust spacecraft is usually a difficult and time-consuming task that involves much experience and expert knowledge in astrodynamics and optimal control theory. This is because the convergence behavior of traditional local optimizers, which are based on numerical optimal control methods, depends on an adequate initial guess, which is often h...

Low-Thrust Trajectory Optimization and Interplanetary Mission Analysis Using Evolutionary Neurocontrol

Innovative solar system exploration missions require ever larger velocity increments and thus ever more demanding propulsion capabilities. Using for those high-energy missions the stateof-the-art technique of chemical propulsion in combination with (eventually multiple) gravity assist maneuvers results in long, complicated, and inflexible mission profiles. Low-thrust propulsions systems can sig...

Global Low-Thrust Trajectory Optimization through Hybridization of a Genetic Algorithm and a Direct Method

To expand mission capabilities needed for exploration of the Solar System, optimal lowthrust trajectories must be found. However, low-thrust, multiple gravity-assist trajectories pose significant optimization challenges because of their expansive, multimodal design space. Here, a novel technique is developed for global, low-thrust, interplanetary trajectory optimization through the hybridizatio...

Multiobjective Optimization of Low-thrust Trajectories Using a Genetic Algorithm Hybrid

In low-thrust, gravity-assist trajectory design, two objectives are often equally important: maximization of final spacecraft mass and minimization of time-of-flight. Generally, these objectives are coupled and competing. Designing the trajectory that is best-suited for a mission typically requires a compromise between the objectives. However, optimizing even a single objective in the complex d...

Aas 07-211 Survey of Global Optimization Methods for Low- Thrust, Multiple Asteroid Tour Missions

Electric propulsion has recently become a viable option for robotic missions, enabling shorter flight times, fewer required planetary gravity assists, smaller launch vehicles, and/or larger payloads. Trajectory design of these missions often relies on local optimization of the low-thrust trajectories using starting points for departure and arrival dates and selection of gravitational swing-bys ...
